Daily Telegraph writer swims across the Tyne
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]On the morning of Sunday 7th October the Daily Telegraph’s football writer Henry Winter took a brisk dip in the Tyne in order to honour his Pardew bet.
In more uncertain times Henry had been so sure that NUFC owner Mike Ashley would show manager Alan Pardew the door that he proposed to swim the Tyne should Toon offer Pardew a long term commitment. Following the recent announcement that Pardew and his staff have sealed an 8 year contract Henry decided to bite the bullet.
With support from experienced swimmer and organiser of the annual Tyne 10 Mile River Swim, Tony Greener, Henry took the plunge from NE1’s Newcastle City Marina and swam across and down river to the pontoon at Royal Naval Reserve training unit HMS Calliope on the Gateshead bank.
Henry took the opportunity to raise money for the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Charity and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, and donations can still be made at Henry’s Just Giving page. You can view footage of Henry’s chilly encounter on the Daily Telegraph website
